Remote access is the ability to get access to a workstation or a computer network from a distance and from various locations.
In all business fields, there may be situations when such an ability is a demand! Employees at branch offices, telecommuters, freelancers or people who are traveling may need access to corporate network resources. Another remote access implementation is remote administration. It enables you to work on a remote computer as if you were sitting in front of it. Users can access their office desktops to run programs, transfer and manage files, check e-mail, contact the management, manage online calendar events and so forth while being on a business trip or a vacation. On the other hand, remote administration is a cost-effective and reliable tool for resellers, IT help desks, software vendors and other support organizations to deliver outstanding PC remote support services to their clients.
The Infotecs Company has developed two software solutions to satisfy all these needs: ViPNet OFFICE and ViPNet CUSTOM, which can be implemented in a variety of network configurations. Furthermore, while all currently available VPN solutions provide only client-to-site or site-to-site connections (remote access to a corporate VPN), the ViPNet VPN technology goes further and offers worldwide real client-to-client connectivity.
How does it work?
The ViPNet VPN software is installed over the existing physical network and it does not worsen its performance. A ViPNet VPN consists of three software components:
Administrative software (ViPNet Manager in ViPNet OFFICE or ViPNet Administrator in ViPNet CUSTOM) ViPNet Coordinator ViPNet Client.
Administrative Software enables you to create the configuration of your ViPNet VPN with the corresponding key sets for the further installation of ViPNet Coordinators and ViPNet Clients.
The difference between ViPNet Administrator and ViPNet Manager is the following: ViPNet Administrator includes two software modules - Network Control Center (NCC) and Key Center (KC). NCC is responsible for creating the network structure and KC generates and subsequently updates initial keys and passwords for network objects and users. ViPNet Manager performs the same functions; however, it is a single software utility, which is the lite version of ViPNet Administrator.
Generally speaking, you don't need any deep knowledge of network administration to work with ViPNet Manager, but ViPNet Administrator requires more skills and experience.
ViPNet VPN Client
All computers registered in a ViPNet network are referred to as VPN Clients. Each VPN client computer is provided with a user-friendly interface to communicate and exchange data with other VPN members. Each VPN client contains all necessary VPN software to reliably protect hardware and software resources from unauthorized access and to ensure safe and easy remote access to any other computer in the corporate VPN that it has connections with. In addition to that, ViPNet Client has a number of complementary services, such as a personal firewall with IDS, a secure chat, encrypted file exchange, a protected and spam-free mail client and the ability to call external applications, such as Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop and VNC, in the secure environment of a ViPNet application.
ViPNet VPN Coordinator
Coordinator is the underlying engine for ViPNet and has various functions. One of the most important functions is being an IP address server. This function makes each Client send its IP address to Coordinator and receive back the IP addresses of all other Clients and Coordinators that are online at the moment. Coordinator is also responsible for data exchange and user functions within the VPN. All communication and data exchange between Client computers are encryption-protected. Whenever possible, the Coordinator application should be installed on a computer with limited access to it since this computer will become the backbone of a VPN network. Coordinator provides seamless communication within the organization by acting as an IP address server and a mail server for all clients. However, the Coordinator application can also be installed on an existing server or a regular workstation for the VPN to function.
The following diagram shows how to enable secure remote access by means of the ViPNet software applications. In this basic configuration, all traffic between any LAN computers with the ViPNet software and any remote/mobile Internet users with the ViPNet software is completely protected from Internet attacks and unauthorized intrusion.
